Years back, I was a short Korean boy, standing in the midst of unwelcoming Filipinos. However, no one dared to look down on me. I made sure my awkward English accent and short height were no obstacles in becoming “cool” among the foreign kids. With the triumph over my shortcomings, I had everything my way. I was in charge, from the way we would bake a cake for a school project, to how we would win a tug of war game. My word was my peer’s command. “Power” was addictive. The mere fact that other kids respected and sometimes even feared me felt so good. Wielding it was for me, not for others. Being voted as the middle school president seemed to prove that this arrogant and powerful leading style worked well. Naturally, I perceived myself as “the” leader.
